Racing Tips

Imola has a few places where passing attempts seem easy but can instead turn sour very quickly. As always, play it safe and go for the pass only if you are clearly alongside the other car before turn in.

Turn 2 Left: Tamburello
You will get a good draft along the start/finish straight so you can certainly attempt an attack under braking here. The left/right is rather fast and narrow, so you must ensure to leave enough room for your competitor and not to end up wide into the line of the other car

Turn 5 Left: Villeneuve
Light braking for this fast left/right makes passing difficult and dangerous, especially when people have to brake while turning into the corner and can thus loose the rear. Overtaking here is generally not recommended.

Turn 7 Left: Tosa
One of the main overtaking spots on the old track, before it was changed after the accidents in the 1994 F1 weekend. Now cars are slower approaching the corner and braking is shorter, but if you get a good exit from the Villeneuve you can certainly try an attack here.

Avoid dive bombing, as always – leave enough room for side by side racing and be careful not to lose the car on exit under acceleration.

Turn 8 Left: Piratella
Coming up to this corner you might get alongside your competitor if you get a better exit from Tosa. Piratella, however, is not a corner to be taken lightly and passing is generally not recommended. Cars will drift wide in this fast double left hander and it takes very good car control and cooperation by both drivers to make it safely side by side.

Turn 10 Right: Acque Minerali
You might be tempted to attack braking into this slow corner, but I recommend against it in normal racing circumstances.

The line is narrow through this corner and the car will be pushed wide, side by side attempts very often end up in a crash.

Turns 11R & 12L: Variante Alta
Hard braking into a very slow chicane. Attacks here are common. Just be careful because the line is very narrow and the high curbs can send you flying, losing control or crashing directly into your competitor. Running over the kerbs can also damage your car.

There is a rather generous run off on exit but please remember that passing while driving off track (1x) is against the rules.

Turn 14 Left: Rivazza
Passing is possible here but side by side is difficult and will slow down both cars a lot.

Generally speaking, it is recommended not to attack here and instead to concentrate on getting a good exit to pass on the following start/finish straight. There are exceptions, as always: for instance, in the final lap of a race this will be your last chance to pass an opponent.
